CARY -- The Research Triangle boys' soccer team continued its hot start to the 2016 campaign with a 9-0 mercy rule victory over Falls Lake Academy Wednesday night at Mills Park in the NCAC opener for both squads.
The Raptors (2-0, 1-0 NCAC) shut out their opponent for the second straight game behind a strong effort from the senior-heavy back line of Sebastian Pleasants, Dylan Burns, Jadyn Asamoah, and Ben Abbott, who ensured that freshman goalkeeper Chandler Frye only had to turn away one shot on the night.
RTHS put the pressure on early and often, with goals by Travis Barker (1), Jadyn Asamoah (1), and Jayden Itejere (3) putting the match out of reach in the first 15 minutes. Goalds would also be scored by Bennett Hudson (2) and Alex Hidden (2) before the freshmen began getting in on the attack, with Matthew Swepson, Asher Wexler, and Elliott Klappenbach all scoring their first goals as Raptors to close out the first half. Freshman defender Ben Abbott (1) would then close out the match 10 minutes into the second half when he blasted a free kick over the head of Firebirds keeper Steven Kearney from 35 yards out.
Despite the lopsided result, first-year coach Jay Liotta found some takeaways from the match. "We were able to try some different combinations out in our lineup," Liotta said, "and getting some of the freshmen like Asher, Matthew, Elliott, and Caleb (Farrelly) into the match for some time helped us see how we can use them more."
With the win, the Raptors have now won 10 out of their last 11 regular season matches dating back to October 8 of last year. RTHS will look to continue their hot start on Friday night at home against Oxford Prep; kickoff is set for 6:00.
