CARY -- Senior forward Sierra Street scored two goals and the defense held off a furious late push as the Research Triangle girls' soccer team clipped NCAC rival East Wake Academy 2-1 on Monday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.
In a game that featured the NCAC's two leading scorers - RTHS's Halima Hasan and EWA's Gaby Toussaint - the offense ultimately came from other players on the pitch. The Raptors (4-2, 2-2 NCAC) were the first team to break through in the 30th minute when Street received a cross from Cassie Mills and put it right past Eagles keeper Abbie Paige for an early lead. Just two minutes into the second half, Paige - who played in the field in the second half - hit a one-timer from Toussaint just past RTHS netminder Candace Swepson to bring the Eagles (2-2-1, 1-2) even. Street would regain the lead for RTHS three minutes later, when EWA's new keeper Emily Albertson misplayed a ball into the 18-yard box and left the net open for Street to blast in the go-ahead goal from 12 yards out.
The Eagles threw virutally their entire squad into the offensive zone for much of the final 20 minutes, and got their best chance to tie the match in the 68th minute when a blast from Toussaint glanced off Swepson's fingertips and dinged off the right post for a corner kick that RTHS would clear.
The Raptors, now winners of three straight, will face their toughest test of the young season on Wednesday when they take on defending 1A state champion Raleigh Charter. Kickoff at WakeMed is set for 4:30.
